Four Ways Your Infant Can Benefit From A Chiropractor

You may think patients visiting a chiropractor are all adults, but there are many ways a chiropractor can also help infants. Chiropractors treat a variety of health issues that people of any age, including small children, may experience. From the moment your baby is sitting in the womb, your chiropractor can play an important role in the child's life by helping to make the birthing process easier. In fact, many pregnant women will visit a chiropractor if their baby is not in the right position for birth. Once the baby is born, the chiropractor's job may not be over. Here are some ways an infant can benefit from chiropractic care.

Treating Birth Trauma

On average, about 29 out of 1000 babies born in the United States experience some type of injury due to birth trauma. The injury often occurs to the baby's neck, shoulder, or head. Fortunately, many neck and spinal issues caused by the birthing process can be treated with the help of a chiropractor. Chiropractors can administer adjustments on infants by using a light amount of pressure. On average, a chiropractor will use no more than two pounds of pressure when providing the infant a spine adjustment.

Increase Immunity

Babies have a much weaker immune system than adults, causing them to get sicker quicker. From fevers to colds, a chiropractor can be very beneficial in treating common illnesses. In fact, one study conducted by the National College of Chiropractic saw a higher white blood cell count after only 15 minutes of chiropractic care. These disease-fighting white blood cells were able to fight off infections and diseases better than those who did not receive the chiropractic care.

Promotes Better Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is very important to many new moms. When a baby undergoes birthing complications, this often results in a misaligned spine. During breastfeeding, the baby will struggle to get into a comfortable position if he or she has a misaligned spine. By aligning the spine properly, the baby can then get in a more comfortable position. This helps increase the likelihood that the baby will latch on better.

Increases Overall Health

One of the most important concerns for new parents is the overall health of the baby. Because a chiropractor will focus on the nervous system, this helps keep the baby healthier overall. The nervous system is directly related to eating and breathing. By opening up the neural pathway, the central nervous system can then function properly. In return, your baby will be better able to eat and swallow which will help strengthen their immune system.
